PAST EVENTS
On February 5th the Toronto chapter of Canada25 successfully hosted the launch
of Canada25's fourth national policy report, "Canadians & the Common Good:
Building a Civic Nation Through Civic Engagement". The event, held at the
Drake Hotel's Underground Lounge, featured a distinguished panel, including:
* Susan Pigott (Executive Lead on Citizen Engagement for Ontario Citizens
Assembly on Electoral Reform), who provided her insight into the progress of
the Ontario Citizens Assembly on Electoral Reform
* Desmond Cole (winner of the City Idol competition and recent Toronto City
Council candidate), who drew on his personal experiences as a youth worker to
highlight the important role community centres and other public spaces play in
contributing to a more engaged civic society
* Jennifer Corriero (Co-Founder and Executive Director of TakingITGlobal), who
focused on the many different ways in which young people are currently engaged
in their communities and how technology acts as a positive tool for organizing
and fostering civic engagement
* Taylor Gunn (Chief Election Officer of Student Vote 2004), who touched on a
variety of topics, but ultimately concluded that it would be worthwhile
to look into implementing mandatory voting as it has the potential to promote civic
engagement, not only by compelling Canadian citizens to fulfill a basic civic
duty, voting, but also because it might encourage citizens to become more
informed about political processes and issues
A Q&A session with the audience was held following the panelists remarks,
with participants exploring different ideas that might encourage young people
to become more civically engaged. The event was also webcast live on
TakingITGlobal's website, with viewers being given the opportunity to post
questions and remarks to the panel in real time.
