Event Details:
Civic engagement - politically, socially and culturally - has been in decline across North America for a number of years, particularly among younger generations. Due to the nature of modern trans-national media, business and NGOs, and the continual flow of people between countries, the reengagement of citizens in civil society is an issue that has now developed a prominent trans-national element.
The San Francisco Bay Area 2005 Roundtable aims to bring together young ex-patriot Canadians living in the SF Bay Area and involve them in the policy discourse on the topic of Civic Engagement Across Borders in North America. Roundtable participants will interact in small group discussions to explore issues such as the effects of North American 'Integration' on civil society and civic engagement in Canada and the US, and the challenges for expatriate Canadians trying to remain involved in Canadian civil society. These group discussions will each develop ideas on how to encourage greater civic engagement throughout North America.
This event is one of a series of local Roundtable events being held across Canada, and in select international venues with significant numbers of young Canadians, as part of a National Policy Project being run by Canada25. The thoughts and suggestions of all of Roundtable participants will be documented and compiled into a summary document by the event organizers and willing participants. The perspectives and recommendations presented in this document will then be incorporated into a Policy Document by Canada25, which will be presented to the Government of Canada, as well as provincial and municipal governments, interested NGOs and corporate organizations.
