Project Description

The National Policy Project is the most visible incarnation of Canada25’s work. It entails a full year of research, consultation and writing on a single topic.

Our last report, Canada and the World, saw more than 400 people get involved directly through different stages of the project.

Our October 2004 survey generated 170 responses from members across the country, and 80 per cent of our members ranked civic engagement as one of their top three choices.

Members indicated that this new topic was very important to them, that they felt well-equipped to explore it, and that it was important to Canada. Our membership commented on the important linkages between civic engagement and other areas of public policy, and pointed out innovative new ways in which Canada25 could frame the debate.

Since then, the National Organizing Committee, made up of members from across Canada and abroad has spend the first half of 2005 framing the issues around Civic Engagement and assisting Canada25's chapter prepare for their Regional Roundtables. The central question our project is seeking to answer is How can we make Canada the most civically engaged society in the world? To facilitate these discussion we developed an issue framework that broke the broad issue of civic engagement into eight different types of engagement - political, social activism, volunteerism, religious and cultural engagement, play and expression, international engagement, virtual engagement and philanthropy.

National Forum

The National Forum will take place in Calgary in January 2006. National delegates will be selected in late October and will be selected from the participants and organizers of our regional roundtables. At the Forum national delegates will come together to select the best ideas ideas generated at the regional roundtables and develop them into coherent policy recommendations that will form the core of Canada25's fouth major policy document. In preparation for the national forum, delegates and the national organizing committee will interview experts, conduct research, and refine the ideas complied from the regional roundtables. For more information on the national forum, inlcuding opportunties for sponsors and speakers, please contact us at engagement@canada25.com.

How do I get 'engaged' in the Civic Engagement project?

There are still many of exciting ways to get involved. You can:
  • Participate in regional roundtable as a delegate
  • Help organize a regional roundtable
  • Help identify and approach potential sponsors for our regional roundtables and National Forum
  • Help identify media and publicity opportunities to spread the word about our project
The chapters that have already held their roundtables could also use support in compiling the ideas collected from their discussions and in some cases, writing and distributing a local report on civic engagement. There is also ongoing opportunities with the chapters for raising local awareness of Canada25 and the project.

At the national level, preparations are underway for the national roundtable, and the national committee is busy securing logistics and recruiting sponsors and speakers. If would like to get involved in the project in any of the above ways please email engagement@canada25.com, or contact your local chapter coordinators.
